Have You Got An Avatar For Your Business?
Finding Your Ideal Demographic ...
Posted by Keith Haynes on 18/04/2012
I was reminded the other day, when talking to a new member of the Entrepreneur's Circle, what their ideal customer and their target market was and they typically said that ''I target everybody as my products and services are used by all types of customer'' ...
Do you know your potential customers in detail? which ones are right for you?
Well the old adage of the scatter gun approach is long dead and buried. Remember we are in the 21st century now and you need to identify different groups - or avatars - of customers so that you can then segment your marketing, thus hitting your target markets in stages with more precision. Remember if you can't measure it you can't manage it can you?
To identify what your ideal avatar and your target market is then you need to answer the following:
Geographic target area - be specific to post codes if necessary
Age, sex, single or relationship, position, type of company - this is your ideal avatar
Key words - likely to be to similar to your Adwords campaign
Media - trade or professional media that your ideal avatar will be affiliated to i.e blogs, books, TV, magazines etc
Celebrities - associated with target market ie Alan Titchmarsh for landscape gardeners etc
Direct competitors - you should know who these are on a local, regional and national basis
In-direct competitors - as above
I have six avatars and one of my avatars is Sally and she is in her 20s, single and has been very successful in the corporate world and branched off into setting up her own business as a image consultant. She appreciates she has to continually learn and take action to be ahead of her competitors. She's excellent at what she does, but is less experienced at marketing and sales. Sally would clearly get the maximum out being a member of the Entrepreneur's Circle and her membership will provide an ever increasing networking opportunities for her.
How great does that sound? I've identified my target demographic in detail and so should you. Nuggets of information like this come from Nigel Botterill's Entrepreneur's Circle all the time.
